How to Apply

Students who plan to earn a degree must submit an application for graduation. We recommend applying for program completion (Graduation Candidacy) during the year before your expected graduation, after you have completed at least 90 credits toward your degree.

  1. Log in to Workday Student. 
  2. Search for Apply for Program Completion. 
  3. Confirm your major and verify that your expected completion date is correct. 
  4. Select Submit. 

Complete Graduation Questionnaire

After you submit your application, a questionnaire will appear in your Tasks (upper-right corner of your Workday screen).

  1. Open the questionnaire. 
  2. Enter: 
    1. The semester and year you plan to participate in Commencement. 
    2. Your graduation semester and year. 
  3. Select Submit. 
  • If you need to update your commencement participation or expected graduation semester, follow these steps:

    1. Log in to Workday Student.
    2. In the search bar, search for Create Request.
    3. Select Student Commencement Information Update under the Request Type field.
    4. Enter your updated information.
    5. Click Submit.
  • Important Deadlines

    • Graduation Application Deadline: Submit your completed Application for Program Completion no later than the day before Commencement. 
    • Commencement Participation Deadline: To participate in Commencement, you must complete the questionnaire by the Drop Deadline for second-block courses during the Fall or Winter semester.

    NOTE: Applying for Program Completion does not automatically register you to participate in commencement. You must also complete the commencement questionnaire in Workday.

    Those who do not march will receive their degree in absentia.

  • Students who are graduating and leaving the island on or near graduation day must stop working three days prior to graduation and complete a Request for Final Payroll Check Form. The Request for Final Payroll Check form must be submitted three days prior to graduation.

    • For those graduating and not leaving the island near graduation day, the last day of work will be graduation day. Graduating students should still submit the Request for Final Payroll Check form.
    • International student graduates may work until graduation day if they will not be leaving the island on or near graduation. Domestic graduates may legally work up to three weeks post-graduation as a student. Managers who have a need for a domestic student to extend should contact ofa.tilini@byuh.edu.

Commencement Schedule

7:45 AMGraduates assemble in the McKay Gymnasium for the academic procession.
8:00 AMCannon Activities Center doors open for accessible entry only.

9:00 AMFamily and friends should be seated in the Cannon Activities Center.

    Following the ceremony, graduates will gather in the Aloha Plaza, outside the Cannon Activities Center, for lei giving and celebration.

    • To preserve the formality and tradition of Commencement, graduates must wear officially approved regalia and follow the BYU–Hawaii Honor Code and dress standards.

      Graduates must wear the appropriate cap, gown, and tassel for the degree they are receiving. Gowns must fit properly and be fully zipped throughout the ceremony. Please order a gown one size larger to ensure it fits comfortably over your Sunday best clothing.

      Graduates whose gowns do not fit properly or cannot be fully zipped may be asked to obtain another gown that fits appropriately before participating in the ceremony.

      • Bachelor’s degree candidates: Solid black cap, gown, and tassel 
      • Associate degree candidates: Solid gray cap, gown, and tassel 
    • The only approved additions to Commencement regalia are:

      • Honor cords awarded by a recognized honor society 
      • The kihei worn by Hawaiian Studies students 

      Other additions, decorations, or alterations are not permitted, as they may create confusion or imply institutional endorsement.

    • Information about purchasing commencement regalia will be emailed to eligible graduates at their @byuh.edu email address by the Registrar’s Office at the beginning of the Fall and Winter semesters. Regalia is available through the Campus Store.

    • Please help us honor our graduates by maintaining the dignity and reverence associated with this service:

      • No signs, posters, banners, or balloons are allowed inside the Cannon Activities Center.
      • No kazoos, party horns, other noisemakers, or yelling are allowed. 
      • Remain composed and seated throughout the ceremony. 
      • Please take crying children outside. 
    • Tickets will be required for entry to Commencement. Additional information about ticket distribution and entry procedures will be provided as details become available by the Registrar’s Office.

      Visitors and guests should enter through the north entrance of the Cannon Activities Center, facing the Lorenzo Snow Building. An additional entrance for ADA guests will be available at the exit doors near the Women’s Locker Room.

      Bags will be checked at the entrance.

    • Visitors and guests should park in the visitor parking lot next to the Lorenzo Snow Building. ADA parking will be available in the Gym Parking Lot near the Seasider Turf Field.

      The Academic Oval road near the Cannon Activities Center will be closed to driving and parking. Visit the BYUH Campus Map to view visitor parking locations.

    • Coordinate a meeting spot with your graduate outside the Cannon Activities Center after the ceremony. Once you and your graduate have exited the CAC, you may present balloons, leis, and other appropriate celebratory items.

    • Following the ceremony, graduates and their guests are welcome to celebrate in approved outdoor areas. Balloons, leis, handheld banners and posters, and freestanding banner stands may be used after guests have exited the Cannon Activities Center.

      Please observe the following campus restrictions:

      • Do not enter closed-off areas.  
      • Do not place mats in areas that are not designated for celebrations, including sidewalks and walkways.  
      • Do not use open-flame devices.  
      • Do not insert objects into turf, grass, gravel, dirt, planters, or plants.  
      • Do not hang or attach banners or decorations to trees, buildings, or rock walls.

    Important Reminders

    As a reminder, please ensure that the mailing and email addresses provided on the Graduate Survey are accurate. If your diploma is returned to our office or not received because an incorrect address was provided, you will be responsible for paying the replacement diploma fee.

    Your diploma will be mailed to the address you provide in the Graduate Survey. A link to the survey is emailed to graduating students during the final two weeks of their graduation semester.

    Your diploma will be ordered using the legal name on file in Workday. Please ensure that your legal name is correct before your diploma is ordered.

    For students with double majors, only the primary major will be printed on the diploma. Both majors will be reflected on the final official transcript.

    • Diplomas are mailed after:

      • Final grades have been posted. 
      • All graduation requirements have been verified and completed. 
      • Any outstanding restrictions or holds on the student's record have been resolved. 
    • For students who list an international address on the Graduate Survey, diplomas are first mailed to the Office of the Registrar and then forwarded to the student. Changing your address on the Parchment website may delay the delivery of your diploma. If you need to update your address, please email reggrad@byuh.edu with the new information.

    • Diplomas are provided in both physical and digital formats. Your digital diploma will be sent to your personal email address.

      Please allow 4–8 weeks after the end of the semester for your diploma to arrive.

      Each graduate receives one diploma complimentary from the university.

    • To order additional copy of diploma, submit a Diploma Order Request form.

    • Latin Honors are determined after final grades for the graduation semester have been posted. If you qualify, your Latin Honors designation will be printed on your diploma.

    Important Reminder

    Please be aware that ALL courses must be completed PRIOR to the graduation date for which you applied. This includes ALL grades for all courses, internships, and Senior Projects which should be completed by the end of the month PRIOR to Commencement.

    Receiving an “I” (Incomplete) or “T” (In Progress) grade will move your graduation to the graduation term in which the final grade is submitted. Your degree will be awarded once the final grade has been submitted and all degree requirements have been verified as complete.
